Opening sentences

We looked at opening sentences from classic children’s books and talked about why they drew us in, and why, as readers, we wanted to know more. Then the children wrote their own opening sentences:

  • The door creaked open of its own accord and a sniffling, whining sound swept the room.
  • “SLAM!” The door banged shut, leaving Sophie trapped in the cupboard with only the company of the spider webs and shadows.
  • “Hey Milly! Did you flush my phone down the toilet again?!” Juliet’s voice flowed through the house like a lion’s roar!
  • Bang! Crash! Wallop! The car door slammed, the ball went through the window, and the chair broke, but that’s not all!

Write some more opening sentences and leave them in the comments below.
